Solar Panels Going Up in Salisbury-Rowan

Solar panels are sprouting up in Salisbury and Rowan County, thanks to a community initiative that started in October.

Solarize Salisbury-Rowan informs residents of the advantages of solar power and helps them reduce costs through competitive bids by installers who have already been professionally vetted. It is a cooperative venture of SmartPower, a national non-profit organization that focuses on clean energy, and the Center for the Environment at Catawba College.

Annual Solar Installations Have Grown 1600 Percent Since 2006

If you were looking for ways to expand the use of renewable energy and solar power, you probably wouldn’t think of a plumber as your best ambassador. 

But as SmartPower President Brian F. Keane recently told a packed room at Catawba College’s Center for the Environment, if you want to sell solar water heaters, you’d best go where the rubber meets the road—or the pipe wrench meets the roof. When the water heater goes, your “front line” of defense is a plumber, not the Sierra Club.

School Bus Replacement Funds Available

Solarize Salisbury-Rowan Launches October 2nd

An innovative program to help individuals and businesses save on electricity costs will be available to residents of Salisbury, Rowan County and the surrounding area beginning October 2 until the end of the year. A community celebration to launch Solarize Salisbury-Rowan will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, at the Lee Street Theatre with live music by Life Size and refreshments.  Officials will offer a brief explanation of the program at 6 p.m.  All interested homeowners and business owners are welcome to attend.

$5 Million Available to Reduce Diesel Emissions at Water Ports

Coming this fall, EPA's Office of Transportation & Air Quality plans to announce the availability of an estimated $5 million in Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) funding for projects to reduce diesel emissions at marine and inland water ports in areas of poor air quality.

Catawba College Cafeteria Makes Move toward Sustainability

Catawba College's cafeteria is going paperless. 

In an effort to become more sustainable, Chartwells food service has announced that its service at Catawba will no longer be using paper, Styrofoam and some plastics. Director of Dining Services Jason Ritter said the move came after a survey of the student body in March. When asked about improvements Chartwells could make on Catawba's campus, 93 percent of students requested more sustainable practices, Ritter said.

Growth in Local Foods Blossoms

People involved in the promotion of local foods in Rowan and Cabarrus counties agree that interest in home-grown foods has blossomed in recent years. “In my opinion, the growth has been exponential,” says Amy Poirier, president of Bread Riot, a Salisbury organization that promotes locally produced food by educating the public and connecting local producers with consumers.
