EPA Awards 642 Clean Diesel Grants Totaling $570 Million

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released the third Report to Congress, highlighting results of projects funded by the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA). EPA has awarded 642 clean diesel grants for a total of $570 million that have replaced or retrofitted 73,000 vehicles. Eighty-one percent of these projects have taken place in areas with air quality challenges. These DERA grants have reduced 335,200 tons of nitrogen oxides, 14,700 tons of particulate matter, 4.8 million tons of carbon dioxide, and have saved 450 million gallons of fuel. EPA estimates that clean diesel funding generates up to $13 in public health benefits for every $1 spent on diesel projects.

EPA Hosts Grants Award Process Webinar

Catawba Completes Phase I of Premier Solar Project
Catawba College has completed Phase I of its solar installation, which will ultimately provide nearly one megawatt of solar electricity for the campus. The eight new solar electric systems will produce more solar electricity than that produced by all the other colleges and universities in North Carolina combined.

Gerry Wood Auto Dealership Goes Solar
The Gerry Wood Auto Group announced on April 22 – Earth Day – that it now produces more solar power than any other dealership in North Carolina.
Its three dealerships on Jake Alexander Boulevard South in Salisbury recently installed 322.5 kilowatts of solar production on its roofs. Only three other automotive groups are listed by the North Carolina Sustainable Energy Association as solar producers, and none has the capacity of the Gerry Wood Group.

Solar Project Under Way at Catawba

EPA announces the school bus fleet owners selected by lottery to participate in the 2014 School Bus Replacement Funding Opportunity. EPA will provide rebates to 76 fleet owners across the country to replace more than 200 older diesel school buses.
